  1. Lovely B&W selection. I like photos when something is tricky to describe as it helps me to see exactly how I should be doing something, but good clear diagrams can often be as effective. Happy pattern writing! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  5. Hm. I'm going with pictures, if they're good pictures and instructive. Some aren't very instructive. Love these fabrics, and I'd love to win them.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I guess I like photos, but diagrams are good in some instances too. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Def photo's! It helps to see what the writer/designer is talking about when you cannot understand what they wrote.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I prefer both photos and diagrams. I know, not much of an answer, but I think they both have their place in patterns. Thanks for the great giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'd say a mixture of both. Diagrams for piecing, pictures for eye candy. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I would say both. I think each can be helpful in a different way.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete

    Good luck with the pattern-making!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Such a wonderful and generous give-away Katherine! Thanks for a chance to win these lovely black and whites!

I love photos and diagrams, depending on the factor of difficulty... LOL, not much of a help, am I?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hate to be that person, but I can go either way! Though I do like diagrams, as long as they are not too complicated!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Generally I'm happy with diagrams.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I try to include diagrams in my patterns but sometimes a photo is the only thing that will work for clarity.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like photos, thanks for the chance to win this beautiful bundle.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I like photos, but sometimes you have to diagram on those, too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I like photos. Thank you for the chance to win your lovely black and white fabrics.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It depends. I usually prefer photos if they're clear, well-lit and close-up. But I like diagrams if they're well-illustrated and clearly show the technique that is being described. Sometimes diagrams do a better job of illustrating a technique close up than a photo can.

    ReplyDelete
  28. oh man, this stack would be perfect for a quilt I'm daydreaming.
I prefer to have pictures. It helps to see an actualy item rather than a drawing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. these are lovely! I am a diagram girl, as long as they are done well. I do all of my patterns with diagrams, easier to photocopy. I suppose if you are doing them PDF photos are fine too! (if you ever need a pattern tester, I'm game!)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am also a follower of your blog

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would pick photos over diagrams, simply because sometimes some people's diagrams make no sense to my brain. ;) But a photo gives you exact visuals of what the step or end result is.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I just started following you with bloglovin'!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think it depends on the project, but typically diagrams or very, very clear photos.

    ReplyDelete

Thanks for the chance to win and good luck with your pattern writing!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I like a mix of both - whatever makes following the directions simpler. For something complicated, diagrams can be less convoluted. (Love the fabrics - I'm looking to stock up on B&Ws! :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. It depends on the project, but usually pictures work great :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I prefer photos, but sometimes, a diagram can better show a complex or fiddly step, so I would say ... a combination of both :D

    ReplyDelete
  66. Patterns with LOTS of photos.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I really prefer the photos unless the diagrams are of exceptional quality. Hand drawn diagrams are unappealing but an Adobe Illustrator diagram done well would be all right.

I prefer diagrams in a pattern - mainly because they use less ink if I print them off!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm collecting black and whites at the moment.

I prefer patterns with photos if I purchase the pattern, but diagrams work better for me when I download a pdf.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Thanks so much for the chance! I prefer diagrams myself.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think it kind of depends on the application. Sometimes a photo says it all, but a diagram can actually point to specific areas when needed. Probably diagrams #1. Thanks for the great giveaway - love blacks & whites!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Easy question - I much prefer photos as they are real life whereas a diagram is really the drawers interpration of it. If that makes sense. Photos do tend to make for longer instructions though.

    ReplyDelete

For blog patterns/tutorials lots of photos.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

  92. I think I'm more of a diagram person. In my mind, it loos alot clearer for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I like photographs unless it's not clear where the seamlines are. I always want on clear diagram of the layout, however. That's the easiest way to understand the quilt and to pick different fabrics.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I'm now following you on bloglovin

    ReplyDelete
  95. Gorgeous fabrics. I like photos, I am definitely a visual person when it comes to learning new things

    ReplyDelete
  96. I tend to like diagrams as there's never a difficulty seeing sewing lines and such due to low light or crazy patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Diagrams are better sometimes but often they're not as clear as a photo or vice versa so it depends on what the particular step calls for I guess!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I prefer photos provided they're clear and set by step ... but I have seen some nice diagrams done as well. Depends on the writers/photographer's skill I think! Go with your strength!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Gorgeous fabrics - thank you :-) I prefer photos - I find them easier to follow.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  115. Photos are nice, but sometimes diagrams are more useful.I think it depends on the project which I would prefer. But most of the time it's diagrams.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I think that diagrams are the most helpful, they're uncluttered and convey exactly what the designer wants.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Diagrams are easier to follow if done well and make it harder to get sidetracked by the colours you used but at least one photo helps with an overall idea. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  118. I like a bit of everything, some times diagrams are easier to follow but generally prefer pictures. Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I like diagrams if they are clear, but sometimes pictures are better since they show the actual fabric and where to place it. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I prefer patterns with clear pictures. Although I have recently followed a bag pattern that had little drawings and mainly text and was able to follow it easily (I am not an expert bag maker). So clear written instructions can also be enough

    ReplyDelete
  122. When in doubt, add a picture or a diagram. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Thank you for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Most of the time I think diagrams work well.

    ReplyDelete
  138. If the choice is between professional quality photos or diagrams, I pick photos every time. However, that said, I have seen some atrocious photowork. Bad lighting, distracting nail art, unpalatable color balance. In that case, professional grade diagrams might be the way to go. Publishing today is so easy that almost all of us can produce quality graphics photo or diagram.

    ReplyDelete
  139. i do better with LOTS of pictures:)

  145. I like photos... but then that's what I'm using in the patterns I'm working on, so I may be a bit biased.

Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Can I say "both" depending on what's being illustrated?

    ReplyDelete
  147. i am much more likely to start and complete a tutorial with both written and picture instructions.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Prefer diagrams with the patterns. Thank you for the chance to add some black and white to the stash!

    ReplyDelete
  149. I like diagrams a bit better - sometimes it's more clear than a picture!

    ReplyDelete
  150. I like diagrams but for the tricky parts photos are good

    ReplyDelete
  151. Unless the photos are really fantastic, I prefer diagrams. And if I'm going to download and print them myself, always diagrams.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I'm also a new follower through bloglovin

    ReplyDelete
  153. I prefer photos if enough steps are shown in separate photographs and there is enough difference in the fabric that the block pattern is visible

    ReplyDelete
  154. I love photos in a pattern or tutorial. I do better if I can actually see what I need to be doing.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I like photos, assuming the author is using simple fabrics (tone-on-tone, maybe, or just solids) so that it is easier to keep track of which fabric is which!

Great bundle, thanks for the chance!

    ReplyDelete
  156. I wish I could make it an either/or answer but sometimes photos are best and sometimes diagrams are best. I think with photos you can do more step outs and with the right fabric choices it does really help.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I like diagrams generally, but sometimes a picture can say 1000 words, know what I mean??!!

    ReplyDelete
  158. i prefer diagrams but I know a lot of people prefer photos.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I like diagrams best. Thanks for the chance at your giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I usually like photos better; however, if it is not taken well it's not going to help at all. I've used both and have found that the verbal directions along with whatever you choose usually answers any questions I may have.

    ReplyDelete
  161. I like diagrams. Sometimes it's hard to see what is actually being shown in a photo, depending on the angle and the light, whereas diagrams show only what you need and there are never hands or sewing machine parts in the way :)

    ReplyDelete
  162. Lovely fabrics!
Why choose? Better to have both photos AND diagrams!

    ReplyDelete
  163. If I can't have both, I would choose clear photos. Have seen some patterns with photos that were useless.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I've been following you for a file now. I have to find out how to keep doing it when they close Google Reader this summer. Thanks a lot!
